What Is Website Traffic and Why Does It Matter?

Website traffic is the number of people who visit your site. That's it. Every time someone loads one of your pages, that counts as a visit.

Where Does Traffic Come From?

There are a few main sources:

  • Organic search — someone Googles something and clicks your result
  • Paid ads — Google Ads, Facebook Ads, etc.
  • Direct — someone types your URL directly
  • Referral — someone clicks a link to your site from another website
  • Social — clicks from social media posts

Most small businesses get the bulk of their traffic from organic search and paid ads.

Why It Matters

More traffic means more potential customers. But traffic alone doesn't pay the bills. What matters is what happens after someone lands on your site.

If 1,000 people visit and nobody calls or fills out a form, that traffic is worthless. If 1,000 people visit and 30 become leads, now you're in business.

The Number Everyone Ignores

Most businesses focus on getting more traffic. That's fine, but it's only half the equation. The other half is converting the traffic you already have. If 97% of visitors leave without doing anything, fixing that gap is usually cheaper and faster than buying more clicks.
